Posted by Tom H on April 9th, 2010
You’ve probably noticed that an election has been announced for 6th May. Clare Politics thinks it’s really important that you vote, so here is a short guide to what you need to do, including how to register and how to find out which candidate best matches your views.
You can choose to vote in Cambridge or your home constituency. To register to vote, go to www.aboutmyvote.co.uk. You fill out the form online, print it out and send it to the address they give you. You need to do this by the 20th April, or you won’t be able to vote. Before the election, you will receive a polling card with the address of your polling station, where you need to go to vote. If you’re voting in your home constituency, you need to register for a postal vote, which you can do here.
If you don’t know who you want to vote for, you could try www.votematch.org.uk, which has a handy quiz to find out which party best matches your views. There is also a summary of each party’s policies here. You can watch a video of Clare Politics’ Question Time with six of the candidates for Cambridge on the Clare Politics facebook group. There will also be TV debates between the party leaders in the next few weeks.
The current MP for Cambridge is a Liberal Democrat and Clare fellow. He is standing down at this election, so Cambridge will have a new MP after the election. There is some information about Cambridge constituency here.
Please make sure you take a break from revision to vote on 6th May.
