Happy new year from Clare Politics! It is great to see the blog thriving, with more and more authors writing all the time - what with the current global economic crisis; the first black US president shortly to take office; Israel’s bombardment and invasion of the Gaza strip; and Russia’s tightening commercial grip over European gas supplies, there is plenty to talk about. Should you wish to write - and we would be delighted if you would - do get in touch with one of the committee members in person or by email.
In readiness for the next eight or so weeks, Clare Politics has arranged another full term of exciting speaker events, beginning with Peter Riddell, Assistant Editor of the times, who will be speaking next Monday 19th January. Other highlights include General Sir Mike Jackson, Andrew Gilligan, and Peter Lilley MP.
In an exciting new venture for the society, Thursday 5th March will see Clare Politics use the 800th anniversary of Cambridge University as an opportunity to discuss the continuing social role it has to play as an institution of higher education, by staging its first panel discussion. Chaired by our honorary patron, Matthew Parris, we will be bringing together six of the nation’s leading academics, journalists and politicians to discuss an issue of ever growing contemporary relevance: ‘Should Cambridge be used for social engineering?’ Due to take place in the auditorium of Clare’s recently completed Gillespie Centre, it promises to be the perfect way to celebrate and cement the growing role of Clare Politics itself in stimulating political discussion in Cambridge.
More information on all talks will, as ever, be provided both on this website, on facebook and by email - but in the meantime, check out the ‘What’s On‘ page for our complete termcard of events.

Cool. I didn’t know it was called the “Gillespie Centre” now. I think I preferred “New Court”…
Yeah I agree. I only found out by perusing the website - incidentally, isn’t it interesting (well no, not really, rather to be expected) that the only part of the Clare College website to be revamped within the last decade is the part dealing with ‘Conferencing’.
Interesting blog on the marketisation of education here we come…
Congrats guys, seriously fantastic line-up!
Just to echo Sam, congrats on a great line-up. And whichever clever-clogs changed my picture on the About Us page, congratulations on that little stroke of genius too.
Haha that would be me. Sam mentioned a while back that it would be a nice idea to have the former committees on the website - if you’d prefer a different photo let me know!
