Hi from Patrick

Well, I finally got up the courage to actually write something in the intimidatingly blank textbox, but I fear it won’t be very substantial just yet. I’ll start small by introducing myself and work my way up to expounding my flawless Theory of Everything. I’m Patrick, a first-year history student, which means I don’t know very much history yet but do tend to get annoyed when people say, ‘history shows us that…’, when it doesn’t. Doing a history degree here, you end up with the impression that history doesn’t show us very much, and it’s all so hopelessly complicated. In fact, that’s what my last essay was about, though I tried to prove that it was a good thing…
Before I disappear totally into incoherent rumination, I’d like to say I’m new to the world of political blogs, so I would appreciate any recommendations anyone has. I managed to lose the last hour following link after link but didn’t find much politics, though I did watch the low-speed havoc that happens in Portland when it snows among other unrelated things.
I’ll be doing a political post very soon, and I think it’s going to be about the Essex Independence Movement. You may not have heard of it yet, but believe me, you soon will.

I’ll return the kind favour you showed me, and make it look as if people other than ourselves are reading each other’s posts….:P
I always had that problem with History (which is, of course, my second love). At one level it was fine. But when people started overanalysing it I got dangerously close to just yelling “Dude! It was hundreds of years ago! Get over it already!”. Not that I have ever spoken like an American teenager from what seems like an appalling bad film. It sounded better in my head.
I adore Slate (www.slate.com). It’s not strictly a blog as such, although it does have blogs on it, I think. On another non-blogging note, they do a podcast on Fridays called the Political Gabfest, which I listen to religiously. But I’ve yet to come across many decent British blogs. People haven’t really gotten into it properly here, I think…
The Essex Independence Movement? Intriguing…
Hey Patrick - this is a great article (or series of articles) that gives a good bearing on getting started. Though you may not be new to blogging - these articles have some great suggestions to launch from. I hope you find them as useful as I did!
